Entry 1: It's Too Commercial Nowadays
02-11-2003 E 4:31 p.m.
Hmm, I had one topic picked out for today, but just now Mom brought up a good point about Valentine's Day. So this may be a two-parter. (Just think of it as a make up for yesterday.)

Mom is right though. Valentine's Day (as has Christmas) has become very commercialized. It used to be (back in my day--gee it's so weird to hear yourself say that) that when Cupid's season came around the air was rosy with love and friendship. A person, if they wanted to, could or just went ahead and gave a valentine to a friend or their special someone. And in that same vein, a person didn't necessarily expect to receive a valentine just because it was V-Day or because they gave someone a valentine.

Well, it's once again Cupid's season and the air is still rosy with love. Friendship is still celebrated, but not quite as equally as romance. Where once Valentine's Day was more of a personal celebration among friends and loved ones, it is now more commercialized. Entreprenuers push and pedal their wares at us, using every medium available to the modern world.

"I feel sorry for the guys. All the advertising. They probably buy something just because they feel guilty if they don't; instead of buying something because they want to." Mom theorized after we saw a series of commercials before The Golden Girls came back on.

She may be right in a way. There are some couples, where the woman expects, or at least hopes, her man will spoil her on Valentine's Day. She may or may not reciprocate the gesture in return, but her expectation is there.

This is true especially among the younger generation. My sis Aubree, is in the seventh grade, and she is wanting, even expecting a valentine from the guy she likes. In fact, all--well, a good majority--of the girls in the middle school are wanting valentines from a boy. I am not kidding. Valentine's Day it seems, sadly, has mostly become a day where women expect to be spoiled by men, instead of a day where friends and couples just celebrate how lucky they are for each other in their own personal way, without all the hoopla of "Show her how you really care" and "Tell her you love the right way, with this..." **Imagine a 14-karat solitare diamond ring tied to a plush, red heart-shaped pillow**

I'm not saying Valentine's has gone beyond being good. It's just, in my opinion, gotten a bit too showy and a bit exclusive. It would be nice if it could be a lil like it was back...in my day. Geesh, I said it again.
