Theologies Are Good In Theory, Not So Hot In Practice
11-13-2002 E 8:57 p.m.
Well folks, after tomorrow this will be my last entry for the week. I'm getting rid of AOL. I know I said I don't prefer local ISPs because every time you move you have to close that account and find another service in your new city and open an account with them. With ISPs like Juno and AOL, you automatically have service once your phoneline is connected. However, I can no longer afford to keep paying AOL. I barely have enough in my account to carry over each month. So Dad's plan is to network our two computers together, therefore both of us using the same Internet account with him paying the bill. I then will have a small buffer of moolah to carry me through the month into the next. Hopefully I can start saving up enough for a savings account that I can open and have on hand for emergencies or special trips. Perhaps even a computer. So, hopefully I will be back online by next Wednesday at the latest.

It looks like Saddam "caved in" as one AOL headline said. What do y'all think of that? I haven't really kept up on the situation so I can't talk much about that, but Saddam is a man that really makes me leery. All I know is he's not a man to be taken lightly or to trust. I'm glad though that he backed down or away. And I'm glad some of the Arab countries are supporting Bush. Or is it mostly zee U.N.? Somebody will have to enlighten me. (We don't get a paper.)

There is a newsletter-like thing that we get through Dad's work called "Imprints." On the front page of the latest issue is an article on Islam. The author explained its beliefs according to the Koran. She said that the Islam we see practiced by the extremist groups and terrorists is not the true Islam. That Islam (practiced by dictators and extremists) is a *searches for word* corrupt version of the true Islam. I can't remember how the author put it, but she described Islam as being a religion teaching its followers a more open and gentler way of life, one that does not subjugate women like many dictators and men of Arab countries do.

I have never read the Koran, therefore I cannot tell you what it teaches. But the author's explanation and defense of Islam reminds me of Marx and his theory of Socialism. In theory they seem sound and excellent solutions for ways of life. But put them into practice and suddenly we see some theologies aren't so hot. That is because mankind has the free agency to do what it wills. And those who are power hungry and would dominate their countries use these theologies to entice people to their causes (Hitler or Lenin). They spout the pure ideals in the beginning, but over time they warp them to their own benefits until they have amassed great power. They become despots or dictators and their people become oppressed. Discontent breaks out and rebels unite to end the the theology's practice, be it an economy or form of religion. If it's religion, then most often a new one breaks off from the parent and is born. Such as Lutheranism or Protestantism.

Anyhow my point is, many theologies could and would work if mankind had enough integrity, kindness and honesty to practice them the way their creators intended. Until that times comes, or if that time comes, many theologies will be perfect in theory only, never in practice.
