Emotions Stay the Same No Matter What Time
02-12-2003 E 4:34 p.m.
I'm in the mood for a love poem, so I looked up some from Ancient Egypt--I'd noticed some listed in my textbook so I thought I'd peruse them.

Except for references to things significant of the Eastern culture, they're actually quite similiar to any love poem we might find today. The same romantic feeling and devotion for one's mate is very much evident in every line written around 3,000 years ago on papyrus scrolls.

Poem 1
I wish I were your mirror
so that you always looked at me.
I wish I were your garment
so that you would always wear me.
I wish I were the water that washes your body.
I wish I were the unguent, O woman,
that I could annoit you.
And the band around your breasts,
and the beads around your neck.
I wish I were your sandal
that you would step with me!

Poem 2
O my beautiful one,
I wish I were part of your affairs, like a wife.
With your hand in mine
your love would be returned.
I implore my heart:
"If my true love stays away tonight,
I shall be like someone already
in the grave."
Are you not my health and my life?
How joyful is your good health
for the heart that seeks you!

Beautiful, huh?

Here's a love song by Ricky Martin and Meja. I wanted to add one from modern times so you can see that even though eras come and go and cultures evolve and styles change, emotions remain the same. Whether you're from ancient times, the middle era or now, love never changes.

Private Emotion
Every endless night has a dawning day,
Every darkest sky has a shining ray.
And it shines on you baby, can't you see?
You're the only one who can shine for me.

It's a private emotion that fills you tonight,
And a silence falls between us
As the shadows steal the light.
And wherever you may find it,
Wherever it may lead
Let your private emotion come to me,
Come to me...

When your soul is tired and your heart is weak
Do you think of love as a one way street?
Well, it runs both ways, open up your eyes.
Can't you see me here, how can you deny?

Oh it's a private emotion that fills you tonight,
And a silence falls between us
As the shadows steal the light.
And wherever you may find it,
Wherever it may lead
Let your private emotion come to me,
Come to me...

Every endless night has a dawning day,
Every darkest sky has a shining ray.
It takes a lot to laugh as your tears go by,
But you can find me here till your tears run dry.

It's a private emotion that fills you tonight,
And a silence falls between us
As the shadows steal the light.
And wherever you may find it,
Wherever it may lead
Let your private emotion come to me,
Come to me...

Let your private emotion come to me,
Come to me...

Let your private emotion come to me
Let your private emotion come to me
Let your private emotion come to me,
Come to me...
Come to me...
