Let's Honor Our Fathers--All of Them
07-04-2004 E 10:58 a.m.
Before I go any further with the next installation of my three-part series I'm dubbing "Keeping God As Part of Our Foundation," I need to add another cartoon. It's actually a continuation of Johnny Hart's B.C. from yesterday.

I admire Johnny Hart for not being afraid to use his comic strip to express his opinions. I guess that's why he's my favorite cartoonist. When I read yesterday and today's B.C. I smiled and thought, Way to go, Johnny.

I received an email some months ago from the girl who has been trying to help me with research for the novel I've been trying to put together. It's this email that gave me the idea for P-O-Y and this series of entries. So, this is my very own P-O-Y; feel free to respond to it if you wish with your own entry.

Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

We have a debate going on in our country right now whether or not we should keep God as part of our foundation. What is your opinion? Should or shouldn't we and why?

My brother made an excellent point last night as he kept me company while the others went to a friend's house to watch the fireworks from the fairgrounds. Mike said, "But not everyone believes in God."

True. One of the great things about this country is its diversity, diversity in people (races), cultures, lifestyles and religions. The United States is a great big melting pot. And while the Founding Fathers could not have forseen this melting pot, they wanted eeevvveerryy American (then and now) to have all the freedoms the British crown had tried denying its subjects and colonists. We have the right to free speech (freedom of the press), to worship and live as we please and many more rights are available to us. There is a stipulation or two, however. As long as we do not infringe upon the rights of others and vice versa we are free.

Because of them (the Founding Fathers) we are very lucky to have the freedoms we do. They paved the way for this great nation, yet they were mindful of their blessings and of God when laying the framework for the United States. So why then, after 200 and some odd years is it unconstitutional now to have God with us as we show or display our patriotism? Just because one group is loudly voicing its discontent, why should the rest of us allow it to end traditions we've had since the births of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? It's dishonoring our Fathers, not to mention Him.

If you go to D.C. He is everywhere. As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S. Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing the one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view--it is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments. And as you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.

There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, D.C.

James Madison, the fourth president known as "The Father of Our Constitution," made the following statement: "We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.

Those who are advocating "No God" have the right to abstain from prayer and other activities. But when they want to take Him out of everything and make it official and legal and have the rest of us live with their choice their rights end. I say, keep God in.
