Jon has taken a liking to this car, a mini corvette in a lot for fixer-uppers not too far from here. It's cute and would be a sweet car for him to work on. Well, he finally got zee courage to talk to Dad about it. Dad was less than receptive to that idea. He didn't mean to, I'm sure, but he barked at Jon, lecturing him on being realistic. That if he wanted a project to work on, then there was the motorcycle in the quanset out on the farm. Or the old pick up and what about his mission? On and on. One by one he shot down Jon's hopes and joy about thinking what he could do with that lil car.
I couldn't help overhearing. (They were right outside my door.) And it reminded me of a lesson in one of the books I read recently, In Deep Waters. The guy didn't believe in dreams, thought they were foolish and wasteful. The woman, however, was a dreamer and believed dreams are necessary for happiness. That without them life would be dull and pointless. The lesson Ben learned was that you don't always have to see the fulfillment of a dream to be happy. Sometimes it's just nice to have a dream as an escape or to keep ya going.
And I thought about that while Dad was lecturing. Sure, Jon has these lofty aspirations and he should come back to Earth when he starts floating too high, but it's good he dreams. He may never get that car, but what's the harm in dreaming about it? Reality will face him soon enough. I know Dad was trying to protect him from possible mistakes, but I think he perhaps needs to be told sometimes dreams are there for the sake of a lil happiness. It doesn't matter if we can make them true or not.
