Guestbook Update
10-17-2004 E 4:07 p.m.
Ok, I've made my choice. I am going back to an old guestbook I used previously. In trying to beat the redirect's timer to get to the modification page for my guestbook I hit "ok" for the program download the porn site wanted viewers to have. (Obviously I failed to beat the redirect's timer and became ultra flustered.)

This one unintentional mistake caused me no small amount of trouble. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT ACCEPT OR PUSH YES IF YOU'RE REDIRECTED TO A PORN SITE FROM THE GUESTBOOK I HAVE AT PRESENT AND ARE ASKED IF YOU WANT TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING. Say no. It was my unfortunate experience to discover I picked up 11 Trojan viruses from that one program or Adult site toolbar. Eleven! And eight of them were write-protected! Which means you cannot clean them or delete them or even quarantine them. Which further means you've got major trouble if you can't find some way to get rid of them. Once I got home last evening from a baby shower in Poky I spent nigh on two and a half hours trying to find a way around that stupid, vile write-protected status of those eight Trojans. I was so frustrated I was close to screaming or crying--I was very tired is my only excuse for wanting to cry. I could not find the blasted file they were all in even doing a search. All I knew from McAfee VirusScan was they were in the C drive and part of the file read _RESTORETEMP and then the Trojan itself. Without the full file name I could not find the correct file they were in!

Giving up on several aborted search attempts I decided to see if I could quarantine them by hand. So, starting with _WINDOWSSYSTEM... I went through several files contained in that directory and voil! I saw a file or two that still pertained to the Adult toolbar I had uninstalled earlier. I sent them to the Recyle Bin and *says with relish* shredded them! I then re-ran VirusScan again and, waiting with pent-up breath, watched like an eagle as each directory or file was named, not daring to hope with each one that passed by clean that I had indeed gotten rid of them. Yet it finished without detecting anything. So I'm hoping they're truly gone.

Just gives me another reason to hate porn sites. And a reason to rethink using Alxnet. I checked out the upgrade. It costs $19.95 a month (or maybe it's a year?) to have a Deluxe account! Hogwash! I know that's not a bad price, considering Dland asks for $18 for six months if you're a regular Gold Member. (Not that I'm complaining, mind you, about its prices, but with it and my other expenses already, I don't have the finances to add a Deluxe guestbook to the list. Nor, at this point, do I really want to. So, within this next week I will be reverting back to my old guestbook. It's free. It's interactive in that I can respond to your messages also, and best of all--as far as I know--it won't give us any hassle with viruses and porn.
